Eyes are the focal point of one's face. They are the first thing people notice and are the key to facial expression. This is the main reason why so many people seek cosmetic eyelid surgery. It is not uncommon to hear over and over again, My eyes always look tired and old even when I feel wide awake. This is very profound because often if you look old and tired you will feel the same way. How many times have you dressed up and prepared to go out feeling good about yourself only to look in the mirror to see that your eyes look older than you feel. The reason for this is that during the ageing process the region around your eyes shows the effects of ageing much sooner than other areas.
Surgical rejuvenation of the eyelids or Blepharoplasty is a procedure usually performed on otherwise healthy patients who may have excess skin, muscle, and fat around the eyelids. The operation is done to rejuvenate the eyelids and achieves a more youthful appearance.
Upper Eyelid
Incisions are carefully made along predetermined marks on the skin. These marks are made so the scar will be hidden in natural creases of the skin. Once the incisions are made, the excess skin is removed. Excess muscle is also carefully removed. Underneath the muscle, two pockets of fat are exposed. A series of surgical instruments are used to remove the fat. The incision is closed with small sutures that are usually underneath the skin. The sutures may also be absorbable. The sutures are usually left in place for three to five days. The patient may have bruising and swelling that will last up to a week or more. Often patients are able to resume fairly normal activities within the first two weeks.
Lower Eyelid - Incision Inside Eyelid
This approach is used only in the lower eyelid in select patients. Many of these patients may not need skin removed, but only excess fatty tissue. The tissues are separated to obtain access to the fat pockets in the lower eyelid. The pockets of fat are exposed and a series of surgical instruments are used to remove the fat. The wound is allowed to heal. Sutures may be placed in the wound depending on the surgeon's preference. In select patients it is possible to have extra skin removed with another incision on the outside of the eyelid. Healing time may be up to two weeks. There may be significant swelling and bruising following the procedure. Sometimes it may take longer to achieve the final results.
Lower Eyelid - Incision Outside Eyelid
An incision is made in the lower eyelid just underneath the lid margin where a normally occurring line or crease exists. The skin is gently pulled back to allow access to the area. The tissue is dissected to the underlying fat pockets. The surgeon will gently press on the eye to better expose the fat that will be removed. The pockets of fat are exposed and a series of surgical instruments are used to remove the fat. The excess skin is pulled away and removed. The wounds are closed with suture of the surgeon's preference. Sutures may be removed in 3-5 days. Healing time may take up to two weeks. The patient can expect to see swelling and bruising during this time. It is possible that it may take several months before final results are achieved.
