Before and After Pictures Otoplasty Pinnaplasty Ear Pinning Ear Surgery Ear Reshaping Ear Pinning Surgery

Otoplasty is a minor procedure that alters the shape of the ears and can improve the appearance of protruding or asymmetric ears. Otoplasty procedures are available in the UK from botonics at our prestigious Harley Street clinic, in the heart of London's private medical district.

Otoplasty is known by various terms. We use the terms interchangeably, and the procedure is also know as

  • Pinnaplasty
  • Ear pinning
  • Ear surgery
  • Ear reshaping
  • Ear correction
  • Ear reduction

In general, ears are not the centre of most people’s attention. How often have you heard someone say: You know, he's got the nicest ears I've ever seen. In fact, ears for the most part, should not be noticed. Most people could not draw an accurate ear from memory if their life depended on it. This is the point regarding ear plastic surgery - ears are meant to be not noticed.

If they are noticed it is usually because there is something different about them; there is something about the ear that is unusual and brings one's attention to it. Commonly, this is because the ear is protruding outwards. Normally, these ears are not bigger than normal. It is just that instead of staying close to the scalp, they bend outward.

Protruding or Asymmetric Ears

This problem is more common in men than women and seems to be associated more with English descent. Many people with this problem do not care too much. Some people think it adds character. This is a healthy way to think about it. If, however, it does bother you, there are plastic surgical options that are very effective at correcting the problem.

The problem starts at birth and is due to a congenital lack of curvature of the cartilage within the ear. Normally, the ear cartilage bends backward toward the scalp, but in people with protruding ears this curvature never occurs and the ear remains protruding outward. If noticed within 6 weeks of birth, it is possible to reshape the cartilage by just molding it into proper position without surgery.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Correction of this failure of cartilage curvature requires a pinnaplasty procedure to surgically removing skin and applying sutures strategically to re-create this bending of the cartilage.

Often, there is too much cartilage and some of it must be removed. In the vast majority of cases, the pinnaplasty incision is located completely behind the ear.

Once it heals, the pinnaplasty procedure is virtually unnoticeable for two reasons. One, this area behind the ear heals exceptionally well with little scar tissue; and, two, the location of the pinnaplasty incision is hidden.

A completely different type of problem is the underdeveloped ear or one that has never developed at all. These two types of problems are called microtia and “anotia” respectively. These are much more difficult problems and may very well be associated with other congenital problems.

The nice thing about correcting protruding ears is that the ear is easy to numb with lidocaine. This allows correction to be done under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort.

Ears that Stand Out

Having features that stand out above the rest can be as much a blessing as it is a curse, all depending on the body part. For example, having ample breasts is seen as attractive in women, whereas having ears that stick too far out from the scalp is usually seen as unappealing to those who have them.

There are a range of corrective cosmetic surgery procedures available for reshaping or resizing different parts of the body, one such procedure being ear pinning for people with ears that protrude from the head, or are significantly asymmetric.

This is often caused by the cartilage in the ear not curving or bending towards the head at birth and within the first few months of life, and instead the ears bend outwards and away from the scalp. However, there are numerous ear pinning and other ear surgery options available to the average sufferer from such misshapen ears.

Pinnaplasty Ear Surgery

An otoplasty procedure describes the cosmetic surgery treatment by which the ears are pinned back; sometimes referred to as ear pinning, a pinnaplasty, or simply ear surgery, and is a very simple and effective procedure for reducing the appearance of protruding ears.

The results from such ear pinning procedures are permanent, and anyone considering this procedure is highly likely to only ever require it once to keep their ears in the desired shape.

botonics: Ears Pinned Back in London

You can get your ears pinned back in London at our Care Quality Commission approved facilities, and will undergo the pinnaplasty procedure either be under a local anaesthetic at our base in Harley Street, or under general anaesthetic at The London Welbeck Hospital.

The ear surgery will only take two hours to perform at the most, and the recovery process is so incredibly quick that our clients will not need to stay in our facilities overnight if they wish to get their ears pinned back in London.

The actual ear pinning procedure will involve a simple incision being made in the crease behind the ear. Depending on the particular requirements of our clients, the ear can then be reshaped and pinned to protrude less and appear more subtle. However, because the incision for the pinnaplasty is so small and is located behind the ear, the scars will be barely visible. Even the stitches used for this kind of ear surgery are self-dissolving, so our clients don't have to come back at a later date to have them removed.

Before any aspect of the pinnaplasty is performed, however, the surgeons at botonics will have an ear surgery consultation with clients to clarify their medical history, and what they want the procedure to achieve. Our surgeons will also examine the ears to determine how effective ear pinning will be when it comes to getting the results our clients want during the consultation.

If you are interested in getting your ears pinned back in London by the friendly experts in botonics' surgical team, contact us today to arrange your free consultation.

I've been having hyperhidrosis treatments with botonics for years now and I don't know how I ever got on without them!  A quick visit every six months or so and I don't ever have to worry about staining my shirts with sweat!  It's such a relief to live my life free of a problem I had for years.

The whole thing took about 10 minutes and it was great, really relaxing. The idea of being able to recline on my sofa and have my husband here during the treatment is far more appealing than going into a clinic.
