Smart Lipo

Smart Lipo (aka laser liposuction, laser lipo and SmartLipo) is a fantastic new technology to safely and permanently remove those stubborn pockets of fat most of us seem to have. It is available in the UK from botonics at our prestigious Harley Street clinic, in the heart of London's premier private medical community. Because SmartLipo is done under a local anaesthetic, no overnight hospital stay is required and you can return to work within a day or two. With aspiration (suction) the results of the procedure are visible as soon as swelling subsides, usually within about a week. Suitable for both men and women, Smart Lipo can be used to treat virtually any area of the body, including:

  • Upper and lower abdomen
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Lower back (love handles)
  • Chest (for men)
  • Neck/jawline
  • Backs of the arms

With Smart Lipo, a 1mm cannula containing a fibre optic cable is inserted under the skin. The optic fibre is then guided through the treatment area by a skilled botonics doctor. Laser energy delivered through the optic fibre melts the fat cells, which are then broken down and aspirated (suctioned). Unlike liposuction, the laser only destroys fat cells, leaving all other healthy cells intact.

After a liposuction treatment, the skin over the treated area tends to be loose and saggy. However, with Smart Lipo the laser stimulates collagen production in the skin, tightening and toning from the inside, resulting in a smoother, firmer result.

We have unrivalled experience performing Smart Lipo procedures since we were among the pioneers to bring Smart Lipo to the UK in 2006, which is one of the 10 reasons why you should choose botonics for your Smart Lipo procedure. For more detailed information, please take a look at our Smart Lipo Frequently Asked Questions section.

Smart Lipo versus Traditional Liposuction

Smart Lipo is superior to traditional liposuction in virtually every way imaginable, including

  • Safety
  • Cost
  • Downtime
  • Discomfort level
  • Bruising
  • Scarring

Most importantly, Smart Lipo is safer than traditional liposuction because it is done under a local anaesthetic rather than a general anaesthetic. This means that no overnight hospital stay is required and so Smart Lipo is done on a purely out-patient basis. Also, traditional liposuction is a very physical process, scraping fat from the body while Smart Lipo gently melts fat which is later aspirated or suctioned from the treated area. Since it is a less physical process, Smart Lipo can safely be used around parts of the body with critical organs and arteries such as the jawline/neck, upper abdomen and inner thighs.

Smart Lipo is less costly than traditional liposuction because no anaesthetist or overnight hospital stay is required. The room in which the procedure takes place does need to be specially designed and approved, but Smart Lipo procedures do not require a full general anaesthetic surgical theatre which further reduces the cost to you.

Smart Lipo results in much less downtime because the procedure is less traumatic to the body. Traditional liposuction physically scrapes the fat from the treated area, causing internal bleeding and nerve damage. Smart Lipo heats up the individual fat cells and melts them, leaving surrounding nerves virtually unharmed and sealing the blood vessels minimising bruising. As a result, most people are back at work within a few days of a Smart Lipo procedure rather than being confined to bed for several weeks as is normal for traditional liposuction.

Smart Lipo causes much less discomfort than traditional liposuction. While it is true that some clients are slightly anxious about being awake during the procedure, once the treatment areas are anaesthetised clients are quite relaxed. The big advantage of Smart Lipo comes after the procedure, when discomfort is significantly better relative to traditional liposuction. This improvement is again due to the unique way Smart Lipo gently melts fat rather than bluntly abrading it. The result is less damage, which means the body has less trauma to repair resulting in reduced bruising and swelling.

Smart Lipo procedures are usually completely without scars. Traditional liposuction requires the use of larger tubes or cannulas around 3-6mm in diameter. By contrast, the instrument used for Smart Lipo is a fine, fibre optic cable of only 1mm in diameter.

Smartlipo - For Men

Before
2 Months After

A large proportion of our Smart Lipo clients are men, with the most popular areas being the chest (see Gynecomastia section below), abdomen, lower back (love handles) and neck/jawline. The client pictured above had Smart Lipo to his lower abdomen and love handles. The before and after photos are eight weeks apart, and the client undertook a healthy exercise routine (and clearly a few sunbed sessions) between the photos. If you want to learn more about Smart Lipo, please read through our comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions section.

Treatable Areas - Men Treatment of Gynecomastia (aka Man Boobs)

Clients who suffer from gynecomastia sometimes wait years before seeking treatment, often going to extraordinary lengths to mask their condition from others. Before SmartLipo, the only options involved painful, risky and expensive surgery.

Treatment of gynecomastia with traditional liposuction requires a general anaesthetic, is painful, requires several weeks of downtime and usually leaves a scar. The client is often left with irregularities and a noticeable ridge between the treated and untreated areas. In some cases, gynecomastia can be successfully treated with Smart Lipo rather than resorting to more invasive procedures.

Smart Lipo for gyne is permanent, safe, virtually painless, takes less than two hours and most clients can return to work the next day. It is done under a local anaesthetic and a fine, fibre optic cable is used to melt the fat, so risks of complications are minimal compared to surgical alternatives. There is very little risk of scarring and support garments need only be worn for about a week.

The results are consistently smooth and natural looking. There is less risk of skin sagging for two reasons because the laser stimulates collagen production which tightens and tones the skin. Since SmartLipo works at the cellular level, there is a smooth transition between the areas that are treated and the surrounding areas. The result is a normal, natural looking chest - which is what everyone deserves!

A Smart Lipo treatment for gyne typically costs £2,400 and Financing is available.

To determine whether your gynecomastia is likely to be treatable with Smart Lipo, all you need do is attend a consultation with your botonics doctor. Your individual condition and likelihood of success will be thoroughly assessed free of charge.

Why Choose botonics for Your SmartLipo Procedure?

  1. Plastic Surgeon: Your Laser Lipo procedure in London is done by a highly experienced Plastic Surgeon, not a cosmetic doctor or general practitioner. The standard of skill required to become a Plastic Surgeon is clearly significantly higher, and this translates into the best possible results for our clients.
  2. Laser Lipo Specialists: We were we among the very first to begin offering Smart Lipo in October 2006, and it has been a specialty of ours ever since. As a result, our surgeons have treated thousands of clients and as a botonics client you benefit from our vast experience.
  3. Latest Technology: We always invest in the latest technology, which gets the best result with the least discomfort for our clients. Having used virtually every laser lipolysis machine on the market, we are now offering treatment using the Osyris Pharon diode laser. This Advanced Smart Lipo is able to remove more fat and do it quicker than previous technologies.
  4. No Salesmen: When you have a consultation with botonics, it is always with the surgeon that will do your procedure, not a ‘client coordinator’ or other salesman. We know your time is precious, and that you do not need to be sold.
  5. Harley Street Our Laser Lipo procedures are done in Harley Street, arguably the most prestigious and sophisticated private medical location in the world.
  6. Financing: In these tough economic times, we offer a no hassle finance plan that lets you spread the cost of your laser lipo procedure over several months with a charge to your debit or credit card.
  7. Discrete, Personal Service: Even though we do a large number of procedures, you’ll always be treated as an individual and your personal needs will be respected. Some clients prefer to maintain discretion about their procedure from work colleagues, friends and even partners. We understand and respect your right to privacy and discretion.
  8. All Inclusive Pricing: We firmly believe in transparent, all inclusive pricing. That’s why all of our prices are disclosed on our website and are fully inclusive of all consultations, procedures, anaesthetic, support garments, aftercare, taxes and charges. We understand that you have more to worry about after your procedure than annoying extra charges.
  9. Reputable Company: botonics has specialised in medical aesthetic procedures since 2005. We’re widely covered in the media and have grown via word-of-mouth referrals from our satisfied clients. All our doctors are full time aesthetic practitioners, not cosmetic hobbyists.
  10. Honest, Ethical Advice: In the under-regulated UK medical aesthetic industry, it’s hard to know whom to trust. We believe that putting the best interests of the client first is not only ethically correct, but also commercially the best approach in the long term. So you can be sure that we’ll only treat you if we believe we can get you a great result.

Treatbales areas for women

An ‘area’ consists of both sides of the body. For example both inner thighs are one area, both love handles are one area. Pricing for more complicated treatment plans can be discussed during your consultation. To see the treatable areas for men, go to SmartLipo for men.

SmartLipo can be repeated after four months. If a large volume or several areas need SmartLipo, a multi-session treatment course and pricing plan tailored to your specific needs can be designed during your botonics consultation.

Prior to your treatment

  1. Avoid taking aspirin, Brufen, Omega 3 or other blood thinners for 10 days.
  2. You may drink non-alcoholic beverages and eat normally before the treatment as it is performed under local anaesthetic.
  3. Tell your botonics doctor prior to the treatment if there has been any change in your medical condition or you have started any new medication.
  4. Few sessions of lymphatic drainage massage or Endermologie prior to the treatment could enhance the results.
  5. Be aware that fluid leakage from the incision points is normal, particularly on the first day. Be sure to wear clothes that are washable for your journey home. The lysate that seeps from incision points is very difficult to wash out of clothes, so be sure to wear clothes that can be discarded if necessary.

After your treatment

  1. Keep the compression garment on for the advised period. This will usually be 24 hours/day for 7 days, then evenings for the following 7 days.
  2. Your botonics doctor will usually prescribe a short course of antibiotics that should be taken for 4 – 5 days. For your convenience we recommend you have this prescription filled BEFORE treatment.
  3. The treated area can be gently massaged after 10 – 12 days.
  4. Avoid vigorous massage for 4 – 5 weeks.
  5. Lymphatic drainage massage or Endermologie sessions could expedite and enhance the final result.
  6. Return to every day activity as normal avoiding vigorous activity or sport for two weeks.
  7. Fluid leakage from the small incisions is normal in the first few days. This will occur mainly in the first 24 hours and you should simply pad the area with fresh gauze as needed. Be sure to wear clothes that are washable for your journey home after the procedure and for the first week. The lysate that seeps from incision points is very difficult to wash out of clothes, so be sure to wear clothes that can be discarded if necessary.
  8. If you experience persistent or increasing swelling and redness that might indicate infection, or bruising that is more than average, contact botonics on 0845 680 1964 for advice.

Staff is friendly, the doctor listens to what YOU want, nice comfortable environment. I had a SmartLipo procedure with Dr Joffily a couple of years ago. When I tell people it was painless, they don't believe me, but it was! After having it on Thursday, and 40 minutes of just resting, I walked to the station, got onto the train, went back to Sussex, had a comfortable weekend and went back to work o...n the Monday! All pain free! I didn't even take a paracetamol that weekend. I had my love handles and just below the buttocks where you get that fat stored. The results were what I expected, but it took about 8 weeks before I saw the final results. At first, you do see a improvement, but after 8 weeks, the cellulite was gone, no down time and it was great!! The really surprising thing is that after having it the cellulite was all gone. I've also had Botox treatments from Naruschka. After 4 days, huge improvement, great I've had botox many times before, but Naruschka's treatment didn't hurt at all, it was well administered, no pain at all. I noticed the change after 4 or 5 days. I've had treatments from many different clinics but I now just go to botonics because they have specialists for what you want, they listen to what you want, and want you to get a good treatment more than just make money off of you. Frequently Asked Questions

? Where can I have SmartLipo treatment?

In London and Nottingham. You can have a consultation with a botonics doctor at any of our clinics, but SmartLipo needs to be done in specially configured facilities.

? What areas can be treated with SmartLipo?

SmartLipo can be used to improve virtually any pocket of fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. This includes areas traditional Liposuction could not treat, such as the backs of the arms, the inner thighs, the upper part of the abdomen and the neck/jawline. SmartLipo is able to treat these areas because it is minimally invasive and less traumatic, so the delicate nerves and blood vessels undergo significantly less trauma

? Can SmartLipo be used to treat fat deposits under the eyes?

No. Surgery or mesotherapy injections are the only solution to fat deposits under the eyes

? What will happen during SmartLipo treatment?

A micro-incision is made to allow the 1mm flexible, optic fibre to be inserted under the skin into the fat pocket to be treated. A laser (hence the term laser lipolysis) is then sent through the optic fibre, guided round the trouble spots where it melts fat cells while leaving all the other healthy cells intact. The laser then fires 10,000 pulses per second at three different spectrums. The first pulse melts the fat cell, the second pulse seals the blood vessels to minimise bleeding and the final pulse stimulates collagen to tighten and tone the skin. Contrast this with traditional Liposuction which effectively scrapes the fat using a 3-6mm metal cannula leaving a visible scar, subcutaneous hollows, internal bleeding and loose skin

? Does SmartLipo treatment hurt?

The level of discomfort experienced by our clients ranges from moderate to virtually painless. Your botonics doctor will anaesthetise the surface of your skin at the entry area, then inject an anaesthetic into the fat layer that will be treated. Those clients that have experienced resistance to local anaesthetics (e.g. when having dental work) may experience a similar resistance to the local anaesthetic we use for SmartLipo treatment. The laser acts on the fat cells without affecting the nerve endings, so discomfort is significantly reduced relative to Liposuction. Some clients describe the sensation as tugging, scraping or a sensation of pressure

? How long does SmartLipo treatment take?

Since it is minimally invasive and done under a local anaesthetic, SmartLipo treatment usually takes less than an hour per area treated. We ask clients to allow anywhere from one and half to three hours from arrival time at the clinic until they are on their way home. You are awake during the entire process and all you will feel is some tugging and pressure as your botonics doctor sculpts the fat melting laser around the treated area. Note, however, that because of sedatives and local anaesthetic, you may feel a bit shakey after the procedure and so you should not drive a car within 24 hours

? When can I have SmartLipo treatment?

For the convenience of our clients, we offer evening and weekend consultations, so you don't have to take any time off of work. SmartLipo procedures can take place Monday through Friday.

? What happens to the fat melted by SmartLipo?

Most of it is aspirated (suctioned) out as a last step in the procedure. The walls of the fat cells are melted by the laser lipolysis and they are converted into a thick, oily liquid. The liquid that is not aspirated on the day is eliminated naturally through your lymphatic and blood systems over the subsequent few weeks. Traditional Liposuction scrapes the fat and vacuums it out, leaving subcutaneous hollows and loose skin.

? How quickly can I return to work after SmartLipo?

While we advise clients to not have any commitment for a couple of days after treatment, many clients actually return to work a day or two after SmartLipo treatment.

? What ages can be treated with SmartLipo?

All ages can be treated. Provided you are reasonably healthy, age is really no restriction. People aged 18 – 80 have benefited from SmartLipo. Good results depend more on your level of physical activity, health and skin tone than biological age.

? Is there any reason I could not be treated with SmartLipo?

Yes. You need to be in generally good health, ideally carry out regular exercise, have good eating habits and your weight should not exceed 25% of your ideal weight. Your blood, heart, liver and kidneys should be free from any disorders and your should not be taking any anticoagulants or be diabetic. You should not be taking steroids or anti-inflammatory medications for more than a few days. Your full medical history will be discussed with your botonics doctor during your consultation to confirm that you're suitable for SmartLipo treatment.

? Will I be put to sleep during the SmartLipo treatment?

No. A local anaesthetic is injected to the target area. You remain awake from beginning to end but thanks to oral sedatives and painkillers, you will be relaxed and largely pain free throughout the procedure.

? How long will I need to be in bandages after SmartLipo?

You will need to wear support garments or bandages for about two weeks after SmartLipo treatment. Traditional Liposuction ruptures veins creating haematomas (blood clots) that require compression bandages to be worn for four weeks or more. This is highly inconvenient for the client. SmartLipo seals the veins through laser pulses, virtually eliminating haematomas and the need for compression bandages. Bruising and swelling is also significantly reduced under SmartLipo treatment.

? How quickly will I see results after SmartLipo treatment?

Provided you have aspiration, the bulk of the results are visible in two weeks. Immediately after SmartLipo treatment, you will be a bit swollen from the anaesthetic and trauma to the fat cells. This will go away in 24 - 48 hours after SmartLipo. Any residual melted fat will be absorbed and eliminated through your body's natural metabolic processes over a period of two months after SmartLipo. We recommend that you have several sessions of lymphatic drainage massage after your procedure, to help speed the results and reduce the swelling.

? How much of a scar will I be left with after SmartLipo?

You will probably be left with a very small scar about 4mm in length for each incision point. For most people, this scar completely fades or becomes invisible with time, although this depends on each individual client's reaction to scarring.

? Will I be left with loose skin after SmartLipo treatment?

No. One of the great advantages of SmartLipo is that the laser actually stimulates the cells that produce collagen and elastin fibres, tightening and toning the skin from the inside. Traditional Liposuction leaves subcutaneous hollows and a feeling of loose or baggy skin since it scrapes and vacuums out fat cells. SmartLipo melts cells so there are no hollows. In fact, we have done a large number of corrective SmartLipo procedures to clients who have been left with uneven or rippling skin following Liposuction.

? Is SmartLipo a treatment for obesity?

No. Both SmartLipo and traditional Liposuction are not appropriate for significant weight loss. Diet and exercise are the best approach to treat obesity.

? Is the fat removal permanent following SmartLipo?

Yes. Your body will not produce any new fat cells to replace the ones melted by SmartLipo. However, you still need to maintain a healthy diet since excess calories will result in a swelling of other remaining fat cells in the body.

? Can I be treated with SmartLipo on the same day as my consulation?

No. Though SmartLipo is minimally invasive and low risk, it is still a serious medical treatment and we require our clients to consider all the alternatives and risks before proceeding. If both you and your botonics doctor are happy to proceed following your consultation, your SmartLipo treatment can be booked in for the next available slot after your consultation.

? Can I receive SmartLipo at any botonics clinic?

No. We currently only offer SmartLipo at our clinics in London Harley Street and Nottingham. However, you can receive your SmartLipo consultation with a botonics doctor at any of our partner Clinic locations.

? Can SmartLipo treatments be repeated?

Yes. Unlike traditional Liposuction, the same area can be treated in successive sessions. In fact, when larger areas of fat need to be addressed, a course of SmartLipo treatments is likely the best option to sculpt the final result. You must wait two months to see the full affect of your treatment after which additional treatments to the same area are possible. Your botonics doctor can discuss the best course of treatment for you.

? Is SmartLipo new technology?

No. SmartLipo has been used to successfully treat thousands of clients worldwide since 2000. It is new to the UK having been introduced in late 2006. We were among the first to offer the procedure and are still one of the most experienced in the country.

? Do I have to visit a hospital for SmartLipo?

No. SmartLipo procedures are undertaken at our botonics clinics in Harley Street and Nottingham. These are private and discrete doctors surgeries

? Is SmartLipo called anything else?

SmartLipo is also referred to as laser lipolysis, laser lipo or LipoSmart. All these terms refer to the same technology and treatment.

? Can I have SmartLipo if I have an under active thyroid?

Provided your hormone levels are stabilised by medication then yes you can still have SmartLipo treatment.

? Where can I have a SmartLipo consultation?

You can have a SmartLipo consultation with a botonics Practitioner at any one of our Clinic partners across greater London.

? How much does SmartLipo cost?

Much less than traditional Liposuction. The exact cost will depend on the extent of the treatment. Most people find that a single SmartLipo session is all they need. If a large volume or several areas need SmartLipo, a multi-session treatment course and pricing plan tailored to your specific needs can be designed during your botonics consultation. Financing is available for SmartLipo treatments.

? Are there any hidden extras in the SmartLipo treatment?

The only potential extra costs for you could be a short course of antibiotics. Otherwise, the price quoted to you by botonics includes the consultation, SmartLipo treatment, clinical photographs, all follow up visits and all applicable taxes.
