How to Best Prepare for Botox

|

Botox, or wrinkle relaxing injections, has become one of the most popular non-invasive treatments aimed at easing fine lines and maintaining skin’s youthful appearance. Whether it’s your first time or you’re already a few sessions in, a little prep work can make a big difference. The proper preparations in advance don’t just make your appointment easier, they also help to ensure the best results and minimise the possibility of any side effects. Think of it as paving the way for your treatment to shine truly.

Why Preparing for Botox Matters

While the Botox procedure itself is straightforward and speedy, what you do ahead of time has a surprisingly significant impact on how things turn out. Preparation may enable your body to respond more effectively, reduce recovery time, and help keep you comfortable from before you begin to long after you finish.

A handful of smart decisions in the days leading up to your session could mean less bruising, less swelling, and a shorter break to healing. It also provides peace of mind that you’ve done everything you can to prepare yourself for success. They’re not just casual recommendations, either; they’re guidelines based on expert medical advice aimed at making sure your treatment is safe and effective.

Review Medications and Supplements

As a first step, it’s essential to review any medications or supplements that you are currently taking in preparation for Botox. Commonly used items in your medicine cabinet can thin your blood, increasing the chances of bruising or bleeding after an injection.

They tend to reduce the effectiveness of your blood platelets at clotting, aspirin and ibuprofen being two of the most common; many of us use such medications without a second thought. The same is true for specific supplements, such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and even garlic, when taken in high doses. Per medical guidance, you’re advised to stop these (to the extent you can do so safely) about a week ahead of your appointment.

That being said, it’s never a good idea to stop a medication that’s been prescribed to you. The best approach is to discuss with your GP or your Botox practitioner everything you are taking, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter remedies. They can also advise you on what’s safe to maintain and what should be paused temporarily.

Consider this a way of offering your practitioner a clear snapshot of your health in a way that might allow them to consider the safest and most effective approach for you. Even something relatively minor like a daily supplement can have an impact.

Recent studies also suggest that zinc can influence how well Botox works. The body needs zinc to bind effectively with the treatment, and people with low levels may not achieve the best possible results. For this reason, many practitioners recommend taking a zinc supplement for about four days before your appointment and continuing for three days afterwards.

Limit Alcohol and Caffeine Intake

It sounds like it shouldn’t need to be said, but passing on that extra glass of wine or third coffee can never be a bad idea when it comes to Botox. Alcohol and caffeine are known to thin the blood and impact circulation, which could make bruising more likely. Caffeine can also increase your heart rate, and that’s not a good idea before a treatment with injections.

The simplest rule of thumb: no alcohol for 24-48 hours in advance, and go easy on the caffeine the day of your appointment. Fear not, this doesn’t mean you need to cut out that morning cup of tea entirely, but like with all good things, moderation is key. A little forethought here is less opportunity for unwanted marks or swelling after you get your treatment.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Light

Hydration is your skin’s best friend, and it will make a noticeable difference when preparing for Botox as well. Staying well-hydrated in the days before your appointment balances your body and ensures a more seamless recovery.

On the day of your appointment, you should have a light, healthy meal before. Something simple, like a salad with protein or yoghurt with fruit, or a sandwich, will help ensure your blood sugar remains steady and that you don’t feel faint during your appointment. Botox sessions are short, but you’ll feel more comfortable if you’re not running on an empty stomach.

Pass on anything too heavy or greasy just before your appointment; you should feel light and relaxed, not heavy and sluggish. A hydrated body and a little fuel can only keep you calm and steady throughout.

Facial and Skincare Preparation

If your skin is the area being treated, it helps to give it a little TLC beforehand. The rule of thumb here is: stay gentle.

Skip waxing, chemical peels, exfoliation or strong skincare products (such as retinoids and acids) 48 to 72 hours before your appointment. These treatments can cause your skin to be more sensitive, which can lead to additional irritation or pain during injections.

The day of, come in with a clean, makeup-free face. And as tempting as it might be to wear some foundation or mascara, your practitioner needs a clean treatment area to work on. The bonus is that not wearing makeup decreases your chances of introducing bacteria into the treated area.

Your skin only requires a simple regime of mild cleansing and moisturising before Botox. Consider it your face’s moment to relax and reset before treatment.

Timing and Social Planning

If you have a big event coming up, a wedding, vacation, or even a series of work presentations, timing your Botox is critical. The results can take anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks to become evident. That’s why it’s a good idea to schedule your appointment at least two weeks before any significant event.

This is your buffering time to allow your skin to become normal and let mild bruising or swelling disappear. It also allows you to look your best on the big day.

Everyone is on their own clock, so our timeline may not apply to everyone. You can refer to Botonics’ before-and-after guide to get an idea of how results compare, but remember: It depends on a myriad of factors. Some forethought will take the pressure off and help you to relish your new look.
